Artist Statement
My painting embodies a series of thought and feeling processes. I can create something then, consider it, adjust it, remove it, replace it, and add a layer to it. I work mainly with my emotions I can be in a good mood, a bad mood, a cheerful mood or a destructive mood.
The way I make paintings reflects the way I experience the world, I find it exciting and challenging to find different ways of using paint, expressive marks to deliberately fashioned self-conscious brushstrokes to graphic signs and symbols in oil and spray paint. My source imagery can come from anywhere; I am inspired by my life. I am interested in detachment and to make the surface become more atmospheric. Within each painting, I am looking, searching for relationships, situations and objects that intrigue me. The paintings develop intuitively, always as a group so they form a dialogue together as a collection. Painting in layers it takes time for the painting to develop, there is no actual plan but there is a process. Although my compositions can appear accidental they are in fact thought out and planned as the painting moves forward. I am interested in areas of painterly colour with text sign making, which includes elements of texts and symbols. Another important role in my work is music; it evokes parts of myself to help me paint. Often my studio becomes as it were a performance space in which I can paint. While I am painting it is like I am in a meditated state, I’m involved in what I want to create. I like to be in the moment and rather than creating a recognizable object, for me, painting is an organic process in which, as it were, the story unfolds through the application of the paint itself.
