My current practice involves site-specific work, including painting, photography, video, light and archive material, presented as single pieces, works in series, or as installations. The work builds on an initial visual engagement with place, adding additional ‘background’ elements of history/narrative gleaned from archival research. I do not take an academic approach, but am guided by aesthetic concerns such as light, composition, space and form as well as a personal interest in the back story of a site. The work generates and presents new bodies of material that pay attention to the presentation, history, narrative and usage of a place.
My work seeks out the visual, historical, political and social elements of a place’s past and present, investigating what endures and describing what is new. For example ‘Godolphin:Night’ (2013) and ‘Godolphin:Day’ (2013) are two recent video works that explore the past and present of the Godolphin Estate, the oldest country house in Cornwall and site of significant social, political, industrial and environmental activity. About CMR
__CMR is an artist-led
initiative designed to create a community of artists who will exhibit
and flourish within this three storey building. It is a voluntary-run organisation and project. We aim to be all
inclusive; we aim to encourage adventurous work that will respond and
challenge not only to CMR’s various spaces but also the broader
Contemporary Art landscape of Cornwall.
