contemporary painting in uncertain worlds

This exhibition, curated specifically by Duncan Hopkins for CMR Art Gallery & Project Space in Redruth, Cornwall, showcases the work of artists who use paint to present realities and perceptions in new and developed ways.

In the 21st century, what is the role of the artist who uses paint and pigment? What is the continuing significance of painting in an apparently restless and uncertain world?

This exhibition, featuring 13 artists from Cornwall, North Devon and Austria, offers possible answers to these questions. These working methods and artworks do not conform to some traditional expectations of painting found in Cornwall, which are often rooted in the histories of Newlyn, the modernism of St. Ives, and illusory romanticism.

Modernism cast its utopian wisdom worldwide, but has become the haunting ghost of regularity and formula. In the wake of conceptual art and the postmodernist death and rebirth of painting, terms such as 'abstract', 'figurative' and 'landscape' have become irrelevant categories. These works draw from the multiple visual languages of painterly possibility and show the diversity and engagement that artists have with modern life. They acknowledge the histories of art and the influences of media, and invoke a subtle subversion.

The use of pigment is a millennia old method of communication and play. These artists use the essential qualities of drawing and mark-making with materials to ascertain that there is more to be drawn out and unleashed through the hand than has already been shown. Using observation, interpretation, symbolism or sense the artists show painting as a mode of questioning and analysis, healing, hope and humour.

The potential algorithms of image and form found within restless complex states are revealed and defined, by the makers, in objects and surfaces. These works explore alternative visions and deeply-grounded realities. They illustrate the ways we connect to place, consciousness, ourselves or each other.

We are honoured to be showing a new work by Anna Stangl, an artist who lives and works in Vienna, Austria. This will be the first time that she has shown in Britain. She has created a unique site-specific wall painting for this show.

All For One

ALL FOR ONE: group painting / Final 26.08.2012 / Mixed media on canvas 100 x 100 x 4 cm

During New Visions, exhibiting artists were invited to work on a canvas installed in CMR for the duration of the exhibition.

Each artist, if they wanted to contribute, was free to respond in whatever way they wish to this invitation, using their own materials and/or selecting from some provided by CMR.

This work is for sale through a sealed bid auction. All proceeds from the sale will go towards sustaining the CMR organism, which at this point in time does not receive core funding, relying instead on a membership subscription and voluntary input. Should 2 bids be for the same amount, the earlier bid will win. Bids of a different nature – eg bartering of skills / time/resources/will also be considered.

You Have To Dream

A Writing Event @ CMR
Saturday 25 Aug, 10-2pm

CMR held its first writing event, 'You Have To Dream', on Saturday 25th August from 10am to 2pm. It was facilitated by Caroline Palmer, a writer who is one of Cornwall Media Resource's Directors.

During this relaxed session, Caroline encourage participants to be inspired by and write about the exhibits in the show, New Visions, in fiction, descriptively or critically.

You Have To Dream welcomed those with all levels of skill and experience, from professionals to those beginning to write. Musicians, song writers, actors and playwrights are also welcome to take part.
