Artist Statement
Chance Transformation Openness Indeterminacy I am interested in the unfolding narrative that an object, shadow or thought can illuminate, the elevation it can receive and how it is possible to sustain the curiosity of the audience through expressive ambiguity. Indeterminate images suspend identification and disrupt the perceptual process. As a result the viewer’s experience is more challenging and hopefully more engaging. Prolonged visual fixation can alter our perceptions, like staring at the flame of a candle. ‘Meditation on a flame gives the dreamer’s psyche vertical nourishment, verticalizing food.’ As a child I used to stare at my face in the mirror without blinking, waiting for transformation, imagining other beings. I became separated from the world, lost in a dream. I am conscious of this same sensation when painting, and seek to transmit this experience to the viewer, or receiver.
